Hedgehog Facial Markings

Facial Markings ~

A hedgehog of any Color can exhibit Facial Markings, but the gene is related to the Pinto gene, so it is never seen on a Solid or Standard hedgehog and is only seen on a Snowflake/White hedgehog that also has Pinto genes in its bloodlines. Most hedgehogs do not have Facial Markings even if they have a Pinto Pattern, so this part/category is also left off the overall “Color” name if it is not present. However, hedgehogs that do have a Facial Marking may exhibit a combination of two or more Facial Markings. In this case, most often only the most prominent Facial Marking is listed in the overall “Color” name to prevent it from being exceedingly long. Because Facial Markings are fairly new to hedgehog breeding and there is not an official record of them on Hedgehog Central, the names for these markings vary wildly from breeder to breeder.

Below are the some of the Facial Markings that hedgehogs may exhibit in our breeding herd:

Half-Mask ~ A hedgehog with a Half-Mask will have a mask on only one side of the face with varying amounts of color for each hedgehog – the other side of the face is all white, although, sometimes the hedgehog will have an Eye Patch on the all white side as well. The mask ideally is split down the face fairly evenly. Some other breeders call this Facial Marking a Pinto-Face or a Split-Face.

Partial Blaze ~ A hedgehog with a Partial Blaze has a white stripe that extends down into the mask, with color on either side of the stripe, and it does not go all the way to the nose. Sometimes the Partial Blaze may be crooked or off-center.

Blaze ~ A hedgehog with a Blaze is a white stripe that extends down into the mask all the way to the nose and has color on either side of the stripe. The width or length of the stripe may vary greatly. The blaze may extend just to the top of the nose or all the way through the nose. Sometimes the blaze may be crooked or off-center.

Snip ~ A Snip is a pink spot on an otherwise darker nose. A Hedgehog with a Snip usually has a Partial Blaze or other Facial Marking, but not always. (It can never have a full Blaze since the white from the Blaze is not interrupted before touching the nose.)

Eye Patch ~ An Eye Patch is a distinct circle(s) of darker coloring around the eye(s) that resembles eye liner. The rest of the face is all white or mostly all white. One or both eyes can have a patch.

White Face ~ A Hedgehog with a White Face will have no color on it face (except for a possible Eye Patch). One or both ears are often all white as well. A Hedgehog that is a Reverse Pinto will not be listed with a White Face since to be a Reverse Pinto the face must be all white.
