Hedgehog Varieties

Variety ~

There are only two Varities of African Pygmy Hedgehogs:

  1. Algerian (the dominant and more common variety)
  2. White-Belly (a recessive and rarer variety)

The distinction between varieties is often confusing for the average person, especially since all African Pygmy Hedgehogs have white bellies. (Variety is not a separate species or even sub-species.)

Basically the difference comes down to whether or not the hedgehog has the tell-tale “tear drops” or “check patches” below the eyes that extend the mask further towards the quill line past the eyes. If the hedgehog does have this, then it is an Algerian. If the mask color stops at the edge of the eyes, then it is a White-Belly.

The darker the color, the easier it is to tell the two Varieties apart. Lighter colored hedgehogs can be difficult to accurately determine their variety since the masks are so light. The best time for determining the Variety is when the babies are just getting their mask hairs at about 3 weeks old. After that it can be very difficult to determine the Variety of a lighter colored hedgehog.

In general, an Algerian hedgehog that has the same color quills as another hedgehog that is a White-Belly will have a darker mask, nose, ears, and more mottling of the belly and legs than the later.

Also, an Algerian’s spine tips will be more cream, whereas, the White-Belly’s spine tips will be more white.

For more information on the Variety differences, please see the links at the bottom of this page.

Most of the hedgehogs born in the Dreamflower Meadows herd are the Algerian Variety since it is dominant genetically and also preferred by most people.
